Fidelity Analysis determines how closely the training environment must replicate the operational environment. DTSM 2 defines four fidelity categories — Physical, Functional, Environmental, and Tactical/Cultural — each with sub-categories rated across 4 levels. This directly informs Methods & Media selection and cost.

Doctrinal Reference

[DTSM 2 Vol 2 Section 5, Figure 32] — Fidelity denotes how closely a set of procedures were implemented as they were supposed to have been. Every relevant task in the Role PS should be analysed for its respective fidelity requirements based on 4 categories: Physical (Layout, Look, Feel), Functional (Format, Content, Response), Environmental (Sound, Motion, Ambience, Geographic), and Tactical/Cultural (Threats, Allies/Neutrals, Conflict character, Team interactions). Each sub-category is rated Level 1-4 (Table 12).

Fidelity Levels (DTSM 2, Table 12)

Level 4: Full replication of operational environment required. Level 3: High degree of replication — close approximation acceptable. Level 2: Moderate — representation sufficient, exact match not required. Level 1: Low — basic awareness sufficient, abstraction acceptable.

📋 Task Selection

🏗️ Physical Fidelity
How closely the physical characteristics of the training environment must match the operational environment — the visual, spatial, and tactile characteristics of equipment, consoles, platforms, and threats.
⚙️ Functional Fidelity
Exposure to equipment functionality, doctrinal procedures, and maintenance routines required for the operational environment.
🌍 Environmental Fidelity
Preparing trainees for operational conditions — simulating conditions that can hinder or complicate performance.
🎖️ Tactical & Cultural Fidelity
Enable individuals and teams to train as they intend to operate — threat types, allied/neutral forces, conflict character, and team C2 interactions.
